John Odin “Butch” Sivertsen, age 75, of Iron River, Wisconsin, passed away Monday, March 25, 2013, at the Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital of Superior Wisconsin. He was born in Ashland Wisconsin on June 22nd 1937, the son of Odin and Violet (Parker) Sivertsen.
John attended Ellis grade school and was a 1955 graduate of Ashland High School. He attended Northland College for two years prior to enlisting in the Navy. He served four years in the Navy where he graduated at the top of his class in electronics. He then spent two years aboard the USS Rockbridge on tour in the Mediterranean.
During his career, John worked at the Marathon Paper Co. in Ashland where he was an active union member. He also managed a sporting goods store in Ashland’s west end and was a supervisor at the Brule fishing rod factory in Iron River. John managed the Co-op Feed Mill in Iron River and served as an instructor, supervisor for a conservation work crew in Bayfield County. John loved to fish, hunt and cook. He spent many hours on Lake Superior and at his cabin on Long Island. He also occasionally provided professional guiding services for bear hunters.
John was an active member of the VFW Post 10197 in Iron River where he loved to cook and play cards. John was also a member of the Masons Blue Lodge, Acacia Itasca Lodge 329, Superior Wisconsin where he had achieved the level of a Perpetual member, Past Master-Past Grand Pursivant and Past District Deputy.
He is survived by his son John “Johnny” and his step-son Ronny Martell of Iron River; his sister Sondra (Archie) Wilson of Rhinelander; nephews John (Toni) Wilson, Thomas Wilson, Paul (Nadine) Wilson, Patrick (Jeanne) Wilson, Ben (Shannon) Sivertsen and nieces Karrie (Dave) Mueller and Michelle (Matt) Boehmer.
John was preceded in death by his parents Odin and Violet Sivertsen; his stepmother Margaret Sivertsen, brother William Sivertsen, and nephew Danny Wilson.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, June 29, 2013 at the Iron River VFW Hall. Visitation will be held at the VFW on Saturday from 10:00 – 11:00 A.M. Inurnment will take place at the Woodland Cemetery in Washburn. The Roberts Funeral Home in Ashland is assisting the family with the arrangements.
