William “Willie” L. Jones (Biianakwad), of Odanah, passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2010 in Odanah. He was born August 28, 1989 in Phoenix, AZ, the son of Stephen A. Jones & Catherine Whitebird-Jackson.
William was a member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa’s. He was a 2007 graduate of Ashland High School and attended the University of WI – Stout. William was an avid basketball player, hockey player, golden gloves boxer with Moore’s Boxing Club and a Green Bay Packer fan. He also enjoyed playing scrabble, cribbage and chess. He also enjoyed four wheelers, motorcycles, Harleys, gathering wild rice, hunting, fishing, making maple syrup and cutting balsam boughs. He enjoyed many cultural activities and traveling to pow-wows and cultural events with his extended family. He also loved country music, playing the violin and singing and dancing. William was a very well reserved, quiet, subtle, polite, kind-hearted and respectful young man.
He is survived by his mother Catherine (Dana) Jackson – Odanah, his father, Stephen Jones – Mason, 7 brothers, Waylon (Noel) Jones, Dillon Burgett, Randall Gouge Jr., Daniel Jackson, James Jackson, Jesse Jackson and John Jackson, 4 sisters, Cherisha Gouge, Shania Jackson, Misty Jackson and Christy Jackson, maternal grandmother, Hazel F. Whitebird, great-great-aunt Phyllis DeBrot, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, Weston Jones and Caleb Lister, special cousins, Jodene Rasnen, Rebecca Genschow, Leslie “Roonie” Rufus, Larry Sweet, Mike Sweet and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, General Lawrence M. Jones Jr. and Janice Jones, maternal grandfather the late hereditary chief, Albert L. Whitebird, Sr., maternal aunt Angeline Whitebird-Sweet, and numerous great uncles and great aunts.
A Mass of Christian Burial will held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Odanah with Fr. Paul Pare O.F.M. officiating. Visitation will begin at 5 P.M., with a prayer service conducted by Cecilia George at 7:00 P.M., at the Bad River Housing building on Tuesday. Burial will take place in the Odanah Cemetery.
